Gekon Project Symposium – Electrotechnical Institute in Warsaw

At the Electrotechnical Institute in Warsaw, a symposium has been held regarding the Gekon Project: “Mobile medium voltage power system for ship supply from harbour waterfront as an element of ecological and economical gain of maritime transport”. The meeting which we had organised was attended by the consortium members: Gdynia Maritime University, University of Zielona Góra, Port of Gdynia Authority, Electrotechnical Institute, and representatives of other research and business centres. The primary objective of the project is development of the medium voltage power system for ship supply from harbour waterfront (S2SP – Shore to Ship Power) along with mobile power terminals, localised on a waterfront depending on demands. The terminal placed on a mobile platform will be equipped with power cable distribution systems for ships. It is an innovative project that brings many benefits when applied. It limits exhaust emissions, reduces pollution and noise, and, consistently, it has a beneficial effect on the environment. It also reduces costs and makes it possible to use energy storages on the land. The S2SP system, that is within the scope of the project, stands out for the ways and opportunities of electricity distribution that it offers. It consists of a container, a mobile connection terminal located on a mobile platform and other subsystems, including switching gear, controllers, communication interfaces. The system, whose preparation is underway, will be characterised by the ability to synchronise with the ship's electrical network, both from the ship (typical synchronisation) and from the land (auto-synchronisation). Auto-synchronisation of transistor AC/DC converters will also allow simultaneous operation of separate terminals, which will essentially distinguish the solution from the current foreign analogues.
